James Lumalcuri, MSW, LICSW

Washington, D.C. Location

Welcome! I am glad you found your way here.

As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), I am dedicated to helping people lead happier, more secure, and fulfilling lives.

Feeling lost or stuck? Contemplating major life changes? In a haze? Not sure where to begin? Together, we will chart a course to help you identify barriers, find solutions, and move towards empowerment, positive change, and resilience. The approach we will take is interactive, focused on solutions, and tailored to your unique strengths and circumstances.

It is important that you choose a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and emotionally safe. I strive to provide a secure, affirming, and empathic space for you to gain greater personal insight, cope better, and more successfully navigate life’s transitions and stressors as you realize your goals for a more vibrant and successful future. I am happy to answer any questions that will help you decide if I am the right person to help you meet the challenges you face.

I have over ten years experience working with a diverse adult client base across a broad range of issues. My specialty areas include: relationship issues; LGBT-related issues; life transitions and adjustments; grief/bereavement; depression; terminal illness; new/chronic illness; aging and eldercare; personal identity development; mindfulness & gratitude; self-esteem/self doubt; shyness; medical error/adverse medical outcomes (physicians & patients); litigation stress; stress management.

I earned my Masters degree in Social Work from Fordham University in New York, and my undergraduate degree in Psychology from the State University of New York. I have worked with clients in a variety of inpatient and outpatient medical and mental health settings, including Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital, where I served as Director of Psychiatric Social Work Services. At Georgetown, I reestablished the Social Work Residency Program, providing clinical supervision to graduate social work students while concurrently serving as adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am licensed in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. My professional affiliations include the Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Work and the National Association of Social Workers.
