Athena Gavaris, MSW, LICSW
Athena Gavaris is a clinical social worker with over 16 years of professional psychotherapy experience. Ms. Gavaris received her Master of Social Work from The Catholic University of America in 1994 and her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from The American University in 1989. In addition, her postgraduate adjunctive training experience includes the Washington School of Psychiatry's Advanced Psychotherapy Training and Dynamics of Psychotherapy programs.
Athena’s experience includes working in both in-patient and out-patient setting providing treatment to individuals, groups, couples, adolescents and families struggling with mental health, relationship, and sexual identity and orientation issues.
In her most recent capacity as Assistant Clinical Director at the Green Door, Athena provides clinical and administrative oversight of the intake, counseling, quality improvement and community support services of the agency.
At Parkhurst and Associates, Athena assists individual adults and couples presenting with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, self-esteem difficulties, sexual identity and orientation issues. Athena’s theoretical approach in her psychotherapy practice is primarily psychodynamic. However, she incorporates cognitive-behavioral approaches to her practice. |
